Dark circles are one of the top three skin concerns in India โ searched millions of times monthly. Yet most advice online addresses the wrong type of dark circle with the wrong treatments. There are actually four different causes of dark circles, and each requires a different approach. Using the wrong treatment does nothing. This guide identifies your type and gives you the correct solution.
The 4 types of dark circles โ India-specific
Type 01 โ Most common in India
Pigmentation (brown/dark brown circles)
The most common type in Indian skin. Excess melanin in the under-eye area creates brown discolouration. Caused by genetics, sun exposure, friction (rubbing eyes), and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation from eczema or allergies. These are NOT shadows โ the darkness is actual pigment in the skin.
What works: Vitamin C eye cream, Alpha Arbutin, Niacinamide, SPF 50 under sunglasses, stop rubbing your eyes. This type responds to treatment but takes 8โ16 weeks.
What doesn't work: Sleep and hydration โ these do not address pigment.
Type 02
Vascular (blue/purple circles)
Thin under-eye skin allows the blood vessels underneath to show through as bluish-purple. Worsens with fatigue, dehydration, and as skin thins with age. More visible in fair-skinned Indians. This is NOT pigmentation โ it is translucency.
What works: Caffeine eye cream (constricts blood vessels temporarily), Vitamin K, retinol (thickens skin over time), staying well-hydrated, sleep.
What doesn't work: Brightening treatments โ there's no pigment to fade.
Type 03
Structural (shadows from hollowing)
As the fat pad under the eye shifts with age or weight loss, a hollow or groove forms at the tear trough. This creates a shadow that looks like a dark circle. Not pigment, not blood vessels โ it is a shadow from the 3D structure of your face.
What works: Hydrating eye creams that plump the area, retinol (stimulates collagen to fill the hollow), dermal fillers (the most effective solution for severe cases).
What doesn't work: Brightening or pigmentation treatments โ completely wrong approach.
Type 04 โ Very common in India
Iron deficiency / anaemia
India has one of the highest rates of iron-deficiency anaemia in the world โ affecting approximately 53% of women and 22% of men. Anaemia reduces the oxygen-carrying capacity of blood, causing the blood in under-eye vessels to appear darker and more visible. If your dark circles are accompanied by fatigue, pale gums or breathlessness, check your haemoglobin.
What works: Iron supplementation (consult doctor), iron-rich diet (spinach, legumes, jaggery), Vitamin C with iron-rich foods to enhance absorption.
What doesn't work: Any topical treatment โ this is a systemic issue.

๐ก When to see a doctor
If dark circles are accompanied by: constant fatigue, shortness of breath, pale gums or nails, dizziness โ get a haemoglobin test. Iron deficiency anaemia is treatable and very common in India.
If circles are deep hollows and topical products have made no difference after 6 months โ a consultation with a cosmetic dermatologist about tear trough fillers may be appropriate.
