Monsoon Skincare India —
Oiliness, Fungal Acne & What to Change

📍 Written for Indian skin⏱️ 7 min read🗓️ April 2026

Monsoon season — June to September — is the hardest time of year for Indian skin. Humidity in coastal cities like Mumbai and Chennai reaches 80–90%, which means your skin's sebaceous glands go into overdrive. The result: extreme oiliness, clogged pores, fungal acne outbreaks, and miliaria (heat rash) even for people with normally dry skin.

Your monsoon routine needs to be lighter, less occlusive, and more focused on oil control and anti-fungal prevention than your dry season routine.

What Monsoon Does to Indian Skin

✓ How to Tell if You Have Fungal Acne

Fungal acne (Malassezia folliculitis): uniform small bumps, slightly itchy, mainly on forehead, chest, or back. Doesn't respond to salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Regular acne: varied sizes, deeper, more painful, responds to salicylic acid. Treatment for fungal acne: zinc pyrithione-based face wash or ketoconazole — not regular acne products.

What to Change in Your Routine for Monsoon

Switch to lighter products across the board

If you use a cream moisturiser: switch to gel. If you use a gel: can skip moisturiser entirely in the morning if skin doesn't feel tight. If you use a rich sunscreen: switch to aqua gel or dry-finish SPF. The goal is minimum occlusion — let skin breathe.

Add salicylic acid

Even if you don't normally use salicylic acid, add a 2% salicylic acid face wash 2–3 nights per week during monsoon. It dissolves the oil and dead skin that accumulate faster in humid weather and prevents the clogged-pore breakouts that peak in August and September.

1
Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash 2% Salicylic
Best monsoon face wash · 200ml
Salicylic acid at 2% — the maximum OTC strength. Dissolves oil and dead skin buildup in pores. Leave it on for 60 seconds before rinsing during monsoon. Use in the PM only — not both AM and PM as it can over-strip.

2
Minimalist Aqua Gel SPF 50 PA++++
Best monsoon SPF — no shine, no grease · 50ml
Gel formula specifically designed for humid climates. Completely matte finish — doesn't add to monsoon oiliness. PA++++ means comprehensive UVA protection even on overcast monsoon days (clouds don't block UVA). Critical for preventing the post-monsoon hyperpigmentation spike.

Monsoon AM/PM Routine (All Skin Types)

  1. AM — Face wash: Gentle cleanser (not salicylic — save that for PM). Himalaya Neem or Simple Micellar gel.
  2. AM — Niacinamide serum: 3 drops. Controls sebum for the day ahead. Skip in extreme heat/humidity if skin is very oily — add back if you notice oil control is needed.
  3. AM — Gel moisturiser or skip: Only if skin feels tight after cleansing. Otherwise SPF acts as enough occlusion in humid weather.
  4. AM — SPF 50 aqua gel: Non-negotiable. UVA penetrates cloud cover. Dark spots from monsoon sun are a real thing.
  5. PM — Salicylic acid face wash: 2–3x per week. Removes oil and dead skin buildup. Leave on 60 seconds.
  6. PM — Light moisturiser: Gel only. Skip if skin doesn't feel tight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I use sunscreen during monsoon? It's cloudy every day.
Absolutely yes. Clouds block visible light (why it's darker on cloudy days) but block only 20–30% of UVA radiation. UVA is what drives pigmentation and ageing. India's monsoon UV index is still 6–8 — moderate to high. SPF is more critical, not less, during overcast conditions.
My skin is suddenly breaking out in small itchy bumps in monsoon. What is this?
Almost certainly fungal acne (Malassezia folliculitis) — very common in India during humid months. Switch to a zinc pyrithione face wash (Head & Shoulders shampoo as a face wash 2x per week is a genuine dermatologist recommendation). Ketoconazole 2% cream is the prescription treatment. Do not treat with regular acne products — they won't work.
My skin is dry in winter but oily in monsoon. What skin type am I?
Climate-reactive combination skin — extremely common in India due to our extreme seasonal variation. Use a heavier routine October–February and a lighter gel-based routine June–September. Your skin type is not fixed year-round.
