Why Indians Skip Sunscreen —
And Why It's Destroying Your Skin

📅 April 2025⏱ 6 min read🔬 Dermatologist insights

India has one of the highest UV indexes in the world. The sun here is genuinely dangerous — more so than in Europe, more so than in most of Asia. Yet sunscreen usage in India is estimated at under 10% of the population.

The result: Indians have dramatically higher rates of hyperpigmentation, premature aging, and sun damage than people in countries with a fraction of our UV exposure — simply because they protect their skin and we do not.

Why Do Indians Skip Sunscreen?

We asked thousands of GlowDekho users. Here are the most common reasons — and why every single one is wrong:

🤎
Myth 01
"I have dark skin — I don't need sunscreen"
The Truth
Darker skin tones have more melanin which provides some natural protection — roughly SPF 13. This is not enough. UV damage in darker skin manifests as hyperpigmentation and uneven tone rather than burns. Dark skin tones are more prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) — meaning every pimple, cut, and inflammation becomes a dark mark that takes months to fade. SPF is more important for dark skin tones, not less.

Myth 02
"It's cloudy today — I don't need sunscreen"
The Truth
Up to 80% of UV rays penetrate clouds. Overcast days do not protect you from UV damage. Additionally, UV rays penetrate glass — sitting next to a window in an office or car exposes you to UVA rays (the ones that cause aging and pigmentation) all day. Sunscreen every day regardless of weather or whether you go outside is the dermatologist recommendation.
Myth 03
"Sunscreen leaves a white cast on my skin"
The Truth
Old sunscreens, especially physical/mineral ones, did leave white cast on dark skin. Modern chemical and hybrid sunscreens are completely invisible on all Indian skin tones. Products like Minimalist's Aqua Gel SPF 50 (₹399), Fixderma Shadow (₹325), and Bioderma Photoderm leave zero white cast. This excuse is no longer valid for any Indian skin tone.
💦
Myth 04
"Sunscreen makes my oily skin even oilier"
The Truth
Old, thick sunscreen formulas did feel heavy on oily skin. Gel-based and aqua-gel sunscreens available today are lighter than most moisturisers. Minimalist's gel SPF, Fixderma Shadow, and La Roche-Posay's Anthelios Dry Touch are all completely non-greasy and leave a matte finish. There is a sunscreen for every skin type available in India today under ₹500.

Myth 05
"I stay indoors all day — I don't need sunscreen"
The Truth
UVA rays — the type responsible for aging and pigmentation — penetrate glass windows completely. If you sit near a window at home or in an office, you are receiving full UVA exposure all day. Phone and laptop screens also emit small amounts of blue light which contributes to pigmentation over long-term exposure. Indoors does not mean UV-free.

What Happens to Skin Without SPF — The Real Timeline

Daily UV exposure without sunscreen over years causes:

⚠️ The Dark Spot Truth Nobody Tells You
You can spend ₹3,000 on the best Vitamin C serum, niacinamide, and kojic acid to fade dark spots. But if you are not using SPF every day, the UV exposure is creating new pigmentation faster than the actives can fade the old spots. You are literally running up a down escalator. SPF is not optional if you want to address pigmentation — it is the most important step of any skin brightening routine.

✓ How to Apply Sunscreen Correctly
Amount: Use 1/4 teaspoon for just the face. Most people use 1/4 of the correct amount which means they are getting SPF 10-15 not SPF 50.

Timing: Apply 15 minutes before sun exposure. Chemical sunscreens need time to activate.

Reapplication: If outdoors, reapply every 2 hours. Sunscreen degrades with UV exposure. One morning application does not last all day outside.

Order: Moisturiser first, then SPF as the absolute last step in your morning routine.
